So when the fabric side of the industry goes through a major shift, it&#8217;s worth understanding, even if the frame itself isn&#8217;t changing. That&#8217;s exactly what&#8217;s happening right now with new EU rules on PFAS chemicals, which affect the water-repellent finishes used on sprayhood and bimini fabrics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-s-happening\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What&#8217;s happening<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">PFAS (&#8220;forever chemicals&#8221;) have long been the basis of the durable water-repellent (DWR) finishes used on marine canvas fabrics like Sunbrella. The EU is restricting these substances across a wide range of product categories, and textiles are included. This is a staged, multi-year process rather than a single cutoff:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pinsentmasons.com\/out-law\/guides\/pfas-regulation-eu\">Pinsent Masons&#8217; regulatory guide<\/a>, specific PFAS compounds are already being restricted in textiles from October 2026, with broader textile-related bans foreseen from October 2027.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitecase.com\/insight-alert\/europes-pfas-restriction-proposal-moving-forward\" class=\"blc-broken-link\" data-blc-broken=\"1\">White &amp; Case<\/a> reports that ECHA&#8217;s scientific advisory committee has backed a broad EU-wide restriction, with only narrow, risk-managed exemptions \u2014 marine textiles are not expected to get special treatment.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.european-coatings.com\/news\/markets-companies\/what-the-eus-pfas-restriction-means-for-coatings-and-paints\/\">European Coatings<\/a> notes that final adoption of the full regulation likely won&#8217;t land until 2027\u20132028, but fabric and coating suppliers are already reformulating ahead of that.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-why-it-matters-even-though-we-build-frames-not-fabric\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why it matters even though we build frames, not fabric<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A frame is only half the equation \u2014 the canvas stretched over it is the other half, and that&#8217;s where this regulation bites. Fabric manufacturer Dickson-Constant (which makes Sunbrella) has already completed its shift to PFAS-free finishes. In their own words, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dickson-constant.com\/en\/news\/1097\/\" class=\"blc-broken-link\" data-blc-broken=\"1\">announced here<\/a>, the switch preserves initial water-repellency performance but brings &#8220;reduced resistance to oily substances and a gradual increase in wettability over time&#8221; compared to the older fluorocarbon-based finish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sunbrella&#8217;s own <a href=\"https:\/\/sunbrella.dickson-constant.com\/en\/marine-faqs\/\">marine FAQ<\/a> goes further, acknowledging that despite years of searching for a substitute, no replacement has yet matched the performance of the fluorinated resin finish traditionally used on marine-grade fabrics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-this-means-if-you-re-planning-a-new-sprayhood-bimini-or-dodger\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">What this means if you&#8217;re planning a new sprayhood, bimini, or dodger<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Your frame will perform exactly as designed<\/strong> \u2014 this shift doesn&#8217;t change frame geometry, fit, or fabrication approach.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The canvas you stretch over it may need more upkeep.<\/strong> Expect the fabric&#8217;s water and stain resistance to fade somewhat faster over the years than older fluorocarbon-treated canvas, meaning periodic re-treatment (non-PFAS spray-on restorers already exist) becomes more of a routine task.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fabric choice is worth a second look.<\/strong> Fully vinyl-coated fabrics, which don&#8217;t rely on the same surface fluorocarbon treatment, may hold their water resistance more consistently over time \u2014 something worth discussing when you&#8217;re specifying canvas for a new frame.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Timing is not urgent, but it&#8217;s not far off either.<\/strong> With textile-specific restrictions phasing in from October 2026 and broadening from 2027, the canvas available in a couple of years will likely already reflect these newer, PFAS-free formulations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-bottom-line\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The bottom line<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">None of this changes how we design or fabricate frames at Freyaframes. But if you&#8217;re planning ahead for a new cover, it&#8217;s worth knowing that the fabric side of the industry is in the middle of a genuine, regulation-driven transition \u2014 and the fabric makers themselves are open about the durability trade-offs involved.
