Standard vs. Custom: Which is right for your vessel?

  • Standard Sprayhoods: The Proven Classic Our standard models are built to the original manufacturer’s specifications. These are ideal for owners of popular production yachts who want a high-quality, “plug-and-play” replacement that mirrors the factory aesthetic while utilizing superior 316L stainless steel and premium marine fabrics.

  • Custom Sprayhoods: The Bespoke Evolution For those who seek perfection, our custom solutions are engineered from the ground up. Using LiDAR 3D scanning, we map your deck’s unique geometry taking all modifications into account to create a one-of-a-kind frame. This allows you to customize the height for better visibility, add integrated grab rails, or extend coverage for maximum protection. If your boat is unique—or your requirements are—our custom frames provide a fit that “off-the-shelf” covers simply cannot match.

The Ultimate Sailboat Sprayhood Buyer’s Guide: Quality, Fit, and Longevity

Investing in a new sprayhood is one of the most significant upgrades you can make to your sailboat. Beyond simply keeping the cockpit dry, a high-quality sprayhood enhances your boat’s silhouette, protects your companionway from UV damage, and extends your sailing season into the colder months. At Freyaframes, we combine traditional craftsmanship with modern digital precision to deliver sprayhoods that stand up to the rigors of the North Sea and the Mediterranean alike.

Material Science: Why Fabric Choice Defines Performance

When selecting a sprayhood, the “canvas” is more than just a cover; it is a high-performance barrier. Many budget manufacturers use standard polyester, which tends to sag when wet and fade within two seasons. At Freyaframes, we prioritize materials that offer dimensional stability and hydrophobic excellence.

Sunbrella® Plus vs. Standard Marine Grade

We primarily utilize Sunbrella® Plus, the industry gold standard. Unlike standard acrylics, Sunbrella® Plus features a special resin coating on the underside, making it virtually waterproof while maintaining the breathability required to prevent cockpit mold.

  • UV Resistance: High-grade solution-dyed acrylics ensure that the color is locked into the fiber core, preventing the “bleached” look common in lower-quality hoods.

  • Tensile Strength: Our fabrics are designed to resist “pouching”—the stretching that occurs under heavy rain or snow loads.
  • Optical Clarity: We use premium 1mm-thick marine vinyl for windows. This ensures a distortion-free view of the horizon, critical for safety during foul-weather navigation.

The Freyaframes Advantage: The "No Boat Visit" Digital Process

The traditional way to get a new sprayhood involves a sailmaker visiting your boat twice: once to template and once to fit. This adds significant travel costs and “seasonal lag.”

Our “secret recipe” is our extensive library of Factory Patterns and 3D scanning/modelling process. By utilizing precise digital scans and original manufacturer specifications for brands like JeanneauHanse, and Bavaria Cruiser, we can manufacture a sprayhood that fits your existing frames perfectly—delivered directly to your marina anywhere in Europe. In case the factory pattern is not available we can utilize 3D scanning workflow.

How the “No Boat Visit” Process Works:

  • Pattern Matching: We match your boat’s specific hull number or model year against our database of original production patterns.
  • 3D modelling: In case the factory pattern is not available we ask you to follow this simple manual and scan your boat with free 3D scanner app. Based on that 3D model we can design perfectly fitting sprayhood frame for you.
  • CNC Precision Cutting: Instead of hand-cutting, which allows for human error, our fabric is cut using computer-controlled blades. This ensures every seam and window is accurate to the millimeter.
  • Frame Synchronization: If you have the original factory frames, our canvas is guaranteed to tension correctly. If you need a full kit, we ship our Original series frames along with the canvas for a plug-and-play installation.

This process reduces the carbon footprint of your purchase and eliminates the “waiting list” typical of local sail lofts.

Engineering for the Elements: Reinforced Stress Points

A sprayhood fails most often at the points of highest tension: the zips, the frame pockets, and the attachment points to the deck.

  • SOLBOND Thread: We use UV-immune sewing thread. Standard polyester thread often rots and snaps after 3–5 years of sun exposure; Solbond thread is guaranteed to outlast the fabric itself.
  • YKK Marine Zippers: All our sprayhoods feature heavy-duty YKK zippers with oversized pulls for easy operation with gloved hands.
  •  Leather Reinforcements: In areas where the fabric rubs against the stainless steel frame, we offer optional leather or PVC reinforcements to prevent chafe.

Maintenance Tips: How to Extend the Life of Your Sprayhood

A well-maintained sprayhood should last between 8 to 12 years. To ensure yours reaches its full potential, follow these professional maintenance protocols:

  • Rinse Regularly: Salt crystals act like tiny magnifying glasses and sandpaper. Rinse your canvas with fresh water after every trip to prevent “salt burn” on the windows and fabric.
  • Avoid Harsh Detergents: Never use bleach or power washers. Use Sail&Kite Cleaner, if not possible then a mild, pH-neutral soap and a soft-bristle brush.
  • Window Care: Never fold your windows for storage, as they can crack. Use a specialized marine window polish like VuPlex twice a year to keep the vinyl supple and prevent yellowing.
  • Dry Storage: If you decommission your boat for winter, ensure the sprayhood is 100% dry before folding it. Storing a damp hood is a recipe for permanent mildew staining.
